The World Shipping Conference was held in Hong Kong to explore the low-carbonization of the shipping industry

2023-11-21
The annual grand event of the global shipping industry - the 3rd World Shipping Conference - grandly opened in Hong Kong, China on November 20, 2023. As one of the most important events of Hong Kong Maritime Week 2023, the conference was led by China Merchants Group and the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, and jointly organized by the Baltic and International Maritime Council, the International Chamber of Shipping, and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association.

According to the data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the global shipping industry consumed about 320 million tons of fuel and emitted more than 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2022. The carbon emissions accounted for nearly 3% of the total global anthropogenic emissions. In July this year, IMO passed the amendment to the greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy, striving for the global shipping industry to achieve net zero emissions around 2050. The shipping industry is facing significant pressure and challenges in decarbonization transformation.

At the conference, China Merchants Energy Shipping Company released the "Smart Carbon Platform". This digital and intelligent carbon emission management platform is currently the first known at home and abroad to propose comprehensive coverage of carbon monitoring, carbon AI and carbon visualization, to accurately collect, intelligently apply and visually present carbon asset data, and innovatively explore the industrial chain. Based on this platform, China Merchants Energy Shipping Company will jointly explore with the main participants of the industrial chain to build it into a technology and data hub that connects the upstream and downstream of the maritime supply chain and value chain, and explore and realize the maximum value of carbon data in various industrial scenarios.

The platform studies the introduction of direct measurement schemes for carbon dioxide and explores new models for ship-side carbon emission measurement. The online measurement and monitoring system for ship carbon emissions jointly developed by China Merchants Energy Shipping Company, China Merchants Testing Company, and Zhongji CarbonSink (a holding subsidiary of SDL), which is the first high-precision carbon emission measurement system in China based on the direct measurement method and data trusted certification technology. This system complies with the relevant requirements of the European Union and can support the international mutual recognition of carbon measurement data.
